Biodiversity & Business

About

This masterclass provides an overview of biodiversity concepts, their relevance to business, and the implications of nature's current state (from the IPBES Reports).

We’ll explore how businesses contribute to environmental deterioration and introductions to global frameworks and solutions, such as TNFD and SBTN, that can be adopted by organisations as positive measures.

Participants will be introduced to identification of business-related nature risks and opportunities, dependencies and impacts, to prepare the way for integrating biodiversity into their risk management & learn best practises to address them.

The course is designed to equip individuals and organisations with the knowledge needed to contribute to a nature-positive future.

Methodology

The course is guided by the principles and findings of the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) Reports. Through a structured approach, participants will:

  • Understand the global context: Analyse current trends in nature's state and biodiversity.

  • Connect the dots: Explore the intricate relationship between biodiversity, climate change, and the UN SDGs.

  • Mapping biodiversity risks* & opportunities: Learn about and have a preliminary in-class mapping of your nature-related risks (and opportunities).

  • Assess business impacts : Delve into the direct and indirect dependencies and impacts of businesses on nature, utilising case studies inspired by the TNFD LEAP approach.

  • Formulate solutions: Learn about global recommendations and best practices for halting biodiversity loss.

Note: * We do not cover transition risks during our workshops & masterclass due to their complex and dynamic constitution. However we can offer our input on over a 30mins Speed-Consulting call if you have any questions.

Effectiveness

By the end of the course, participants will be able to assess their own organisation's nature dependencies and impacts using a practical, case-study driven approach.

They will gain a foundational understanding of key global frameworks and standards like TNFD, GRI, and KMGBF.

This knowledge empowers them to align their sustainability reporting and strategies with global best practices, preparing their organisations for the increasing demands of nature-related disclosure and action.

Key Concepts

  • IPBES Reports: The authoritative scientific basis for understanding the state of nature and its contributions to people.

  • Biodiversity Loss: The decline in the variety of life on Earth, and its profound impacts on ecosystems and human well-being.

  • Nature Dependencies and Impacts: The ways in which a business relies on and affects the natural world, both directly and indirectly.

  • Global Frameworks: Key reporting standards and agreements, including the TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures), GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), and KMGBF (Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework).

  • TNFD LEAP Approach: A structured process (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare) for organisations to manage nature-related issues.
