DEEP TIME WALK

A transformative journey through 4.6 billion years of Earth history
through a 4.6km tropical forest guided walk

A Deep Time Walk is a way of grasping the vastness of Earth's 4.6 billion year history.

Every 100m represents 100 million years of the Earth’s existence.

In this guided forest-bathing walking meditation tour,
we’ll experience the earth’s sacred lineage of the last 4.6 billion years.

the speed of the human evolution, in contrast, is just a blink in the ecological eye.

Human civilisations have evolved far quicker than it has taken to form our planet’s lifegiving systems.

This is the man-made cause of the climate and ecological crisis that we are experiencing today.

The ratio of Earth's evolution to human evolution is approximately 15,133 to 1.

for every single year of human evolution, the Earth has been evolving for over 15,000 years.

if the entire history of the Earth were a single 24-hour day, Homo sapiens would have appeared only in the last 1.9 seconds.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ROUTE:

A total of 4.6km, starting at Mount Faber, crossing the Henderson Waves & finishing at Hort Park.

Every 100 metres = 100 million years, hence by the end of the walk, we would have covered the 4.6 billion years since Earth's genesis.

☄️0km starting point:

A Mars-sized body, named Theia, collided with the early Earth. The debris from this massive impact coalesced in orbit to form the Moon.

🌊200m:

Earth was subjected to an intense bombardment of asteroids and intense heat, which boiled off any liquid water on the surface, forming water vapour in the atmosphere. When it finally rained, our first ocean was formed.

🦠800m:

The first sign of life emerged. The early atmosphere was a toxic mix of methane, ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen, but these early life forms were anaerobic, meaning they did not require oxygen.

😮‍💨2.3km halfway point:

This marks the epic moment of finally enough oxygen accumulated in the atmosphere, to create the breathable environment we know today.

🦖4.6km:

We enter the Carboniferous “coal-bearing” stage of the Paleozoic Era and age of dinosaurs.

🫂Last 30cm:

The entire history of Homo sapiens (roughly 300,000 years) is represented in just the last 30cm of the 4.6 km walk. The entirety of recorded human history, from the first civilizations, is compressed in these final millimetres.

GOALS OF THE DEEP TIME WALK EXPERIENCE:

The goals of the Deep Time Walk are to:

  • Foster a sense of "deep time": It moves the concept of billions of years from a cerebral idea to a physical, visceral experience.

  • Contextualise humanity: It helps people understand that humans are not the centre of the planet's history, but a very new and brief part of it.

  • Inspire environmental awareness: By highlighting how rapidly humanity has impacted the planet, particularly since the Industrial Revolution, it can be a catalyst for a deeper commitment to sustainability and ecological action.

ORIGINS OF THE DEEP TIME WALK:

The Deep Time Walk Project was founded in 2016 and launched the Deep Time Walk App a year later.
The project has subsequently spawned other products including the tactile
Deep Time Cards. This is now complemented with a comprehensive set of facilitator resources, a facilitator training programme and a thriving community.
