Biodiversity
About
The Biodiversity Collage is an interactive, collaborative workshop designed to help participants understand the complex and interconnected issues of biodiversity loss.
It is modeled after the highly successful "Climate Fresk" (La Fresque du Climat), which uses a similar card-based methodology to teach the science of climate change.
In this workshop, you'll learn why biodiversity is vital for the wellbeing & preservation of our societal ecosystems. The challenge lies in balancing urban demand for natural resources/services with a need to protect nature.
Methodology
Card-Game Based; with around 40 cards, each detailing an aspect of biodiversity loss and the web of life, from drivers and services to impacts on humanity and nature.
Happens in 3 main phases;
The "Head" - Knowledge on Biodiversity Loss, its drivers and human/social impacts through Biodiversity Collage Card-Game
The "Heart" - Creative exercises of ownership and reflection
The "Hands" - Sharing general and/or corporate sustainability journey + Curated brainstorm to enable your participants to take nature-based action, understand your organisation’s dependencies and impacts on nature and biodiversity, and understand the business risks involved.
Date figures are from IPBES Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services. These are the same reports that inform global political and economic decision-making at the highest level.
Effectiveness
Corporate Sustainability knowledge:
Participants will learn the awareness and appreciation of materials’ sourcing
Biodiversity impact at an individual and organisational level
Industry specific case studies and/or examples of how nature both provides raw materials & other ecosystem services, but can also become over-exploited with lack of stewardship.
Possible Brainstorming Activities/Ideation Exercises:
How to source sustainability
Produce/manufacture with lowered nature impacts,
Identify biodiversity-related risks, impacts, dependencies as well as opportunities for both positive nature and business outcomes.
Workshop Flow / Agenda (3 hours)
Introductions & Icebreakers (15mins)
Biodiversity Collage Card-game (80 mins): Participants collaboratively build the "collage" by identifying links between cards representing various aspects of biodiversity, its functions, the threats it faces, and its consequences. This phase includes the creative and artistic expression of their understanding.
Debrief & Reflections (20 mins): A facilitated discussion on the insights gained from building the collage, allowing participants to process emotions and share their initial reflections on biodiversity loss.
Context-Setting (timing varies between 15-30mins): Depending on the client's needs, this segment can include a presentation on the company's specific context regarding biodiversity, its current sustainability strategy, or relevant business impacts and dependencies on nature.
Brainstorming/Ideation (timing varies between 30mins, 45mins, 60 mins or longer): Based on decided objectives & complexity of exercise, participants brainstorm actions related to biodiversity:
Basic: What individuals can do at a personal level to reduce their impact on biodiversity and/or take community/office action.
Advanced: What employees can do within their job functions/teams to contribute to their organization's nature-positive goals and biodiversity protection as a larger entity.
